Cuban identity and travel card, with visa for U.S. Havana, Cuba. 1948

Statement issued by the town of Banyuls-sur-Mer, signed by Mayor Azema, re-elected after the Liberation. 1945. Translation by Lisa Fittko: "We, Mayor of Banyuls s/mer, certify that Elisabeth Lisa Fittko and Jean Fittko, refugees at Banyuls s/mer, organized during the winter of 1940/41 the clandestine passage of patriots into Spain. Signed: Maryor Azema."

Hans Fittko. Carte d'identité. Paris. 1938.

Lisa Fittko. Passport photo. Cuba. 1942. Stamp: Committee of German Jewish Refugees in Cuba."

Hans Fittko identification card issued by the town hall of Cassis to protect the refugees, per Lisa Fittkoo: "The town administration of Cassis was, of course, not authorized to issue papers in the name of the Prefecture; there was no 'Service des Etrangers' (Service for Aliens); the contents of the 'circulaire' was unknown, and the mayor could not sign 'for the Prefect.' The paper certifies that the bearer 'has appeared at the Service for Aliens to regularise her (his) situation.' Even though the document has no real meaning, it has repeatedly saved us from being arrested."

This name was occasionally used by me for security reasons." "Since it would be too complicated to explain," she explains to her publisher, "I would prefer to have that name covered and leave a blank space wherever it appears."

Postcard, early '80s. Lisa Fittko: The bay and village of Banyuls Foothills leading into mountains--crossing point into Spain higher up, farther to the right (not on picture). The village is unchanged except for the few modern buildings (no red roofs).
